I am going to write just one review for this series of books by Denise Domning. I have to say that I enjoyed the whole series about the Graistan brothers. This last one had me a bit puzzled about how it fit into the series, it seemed to be going in another direction from the family until near the last. Then Denise tied it all in with the rest of the series. I really wish there was a 6th book to bring all 5 brothers together like she did with the epilogue of book 4, that was a fun ending. This is a series worth reading. I'm not much into graphic romance novels but this series was alright as far as that part. The plots were very good.Product details

Ms Domingo creates wonderfully flawed characters that somehow complement each other and become an entertaining read. While this story was the fifth in a series, it is constructed as an independent saga and doesn't rely on past story lines or characters - with one delightful exception. I found the time setting and attention to the period's cultural norms enlightening as well.
All in all a good read and I recommend it.
I've grown quite fond of Ms Domning's writing. Her story lines and plots are always satisfyingly complex and believable. The characters are so realistic in description, actions and words I often feel I'm in the scene with them. Her historical research is impeccable, illuminating the details of medieval life like no other author I know.
Romance is the name of the game in this book. This book delivers what we all want more romance and excitement in our life. Overall i am very well pleased with this book and the excitement it has brought me. This book had me unwilling to put it down until I turned the last page. Would I recommend this book to other people? Yes I would including friends .I absolutely think this is great book. Johanna is the daughter of a wealthy spice merchant. Robert (Rob) is a servant, later to be an apprentice of the spice merchant. Johanna and Rob say secret marry vows and consummate their vows. She is betrothed to Katel, another apprentice. Because the betrothal is under contract, Johanna is forced to marry Katel and Rob is sent away to apprenticeship under a merchant in Lynn. Sixteen years later Rob comes to confront Katel about the theft of grain Katel has stolen. Katel has manipulated events to assuage his hatred of Johanna and Rob. They figure out Katel's plot against them. Will Katel succeed in hanging Rob and Johanna? Can they be together as husband and wife?
I have only touched the surface of this medieval novel. There is so much more to the plot and subplots, each tightly tied together. The main characters feel like family. The research is superb. The chapters flip between present and past. The reader gets the full history of the characters. I definitely want to read the four novels before this one.
I love this series and I will read anything that Denise Domning writes! This is the 5th book I've read by the author and I've loved each one. This one shows the devastation that an evil man can commit. The suspense in the story is the struggle against him. And what a hopeless love story! The man and the woman are very appealing but they have realistic flaws. The evil man is not a stereotype, either.
This author writes with language, setting, and historical detail that put the readers in the medieval world. I find myself wanting to see what the clothing looked like, and what the houses were like. There's a lot of good description in the book, but it doesn't overwhelm the story it just draws you in.
I totally agree with the author's statement that wrapping historical facts in good fiction is a wonderful way to teach you a bout history, and she's done just that with Autumn's Flame. The details of merchant life are brought forth with a skilled hand, from he costumes to the neighborhood streets to the tower or the hiding place in the bushes. Wherever the story took me, I felt I was there with the characters. I loved the strength and determination of Rob and Johanna and the fierceness of their love.
I have two complaints. This was my first time with the series. Perhaps this was made clear in the first book, but it's not clear here where the story takes place. I thought England but then there are several references to English not being the native language. That oversight could be easily rectified to give the reader a better anchor. The other is the jumping back and forth in time. I read about that in another review and thought it wouldn't be a problem. For the most part, it wasn't, but on occasion the time difference got confusing.
I must say it's one of the plots that I have the most problems with - lovers separated for years before getting back to each other. In this case it takes 16 years. Very difficult to read about all the heartache and betrayals. The author is skilled and her storytelling excellent. As other reviewers have mentioned there are a lot of flashbacks and you do have to pay attention to the years stated at the tops of new chapters, to make sure you follow the story properly.
I haven't given a high rating to this book because it isn't full of romance, in fact I'd say the book is more about bitterness in loads of ways. The bitterness of the h because of being betrayed by the H when they were young. The bitterness of the h's husband and all the devastation he wreaks. I think that perhaps the flashbacks are supposed to contribute to the romance but they didn't do that for me.
